Economics AS
Examination Board: AQA
Why Study Economics?
AS Economics provides an introduction to a subject that can be taken by Welbeck students at degree level. Students gain an insight into a subject, which provides a rational basis for understanding human behaviour and decision making. Economic decision making concepts can be applied to a wide variety of situations, ranging from the determination of governmental policy to the simple everyday choices that are faced by individuals in the usual course of their lives.
What is Studied?
Students learn to make sense of the economy as a whole: how it works (or not) and how the government attempts to control it. The syllabus will cover interest rates, exchange rates, and government involvement in the economy. The application of economic theory is considered in the light of a number of issues including global warming, inflation, and unemployment. Whilst macro economics is concerned with the bigger picture, micro economics concerns the study of Individual markets, where the contexts vary between topics such as agriculture, health and crime.
Method of Assessment
As with nearly all AS exams, there are two units to be examined. Both of these entail a mixture of multiple choice and data response questions. Unit 1 will be assessed in January, with Unit 2 being assessed in June.
