Girls Rugby
Full 15’s - Welbeck girls’ rugby is held on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon until Christmas, after which training is from 14.00 every Wednesday and Saturday. Training caters for all abilities, with all basic skills being covered from the start. It usually begins with some ball handling skills and contact drills, and ends in a practice match. With high quality coaching players progress quickly each year, and the end result is always a close knit, dedicated team. Throughout the year we have fixtures against numerous clubs and colleges. The squad is highly accomplished, usually winning most, if not all, of our matches each season. We are also well known by other teams, and recognised as being one of the top college teams in the country. For the first time this year, a squad of 22 girls will be going on tour to Ireland to play a series of full 15s matches. Hopefully this will be something that continues in seasons to come.
Sevens - Welbeck girls’ rugby trains up to twice a week during either GA or Major sport. Although training is predominantly for full 15’s, each year a squad is entered into several major sevens tournaments. The most high profile one being Rosslyn Park National School’s sevens in March. Traditionally a successful squad, we have consistently made it to the semi-finals and finals. Other tournaments we have entered include Berkhamsted and London Oratory, again being amongst the main contenders to win. This year, Welbeck will be hosting its own girls’ rugby sevens tournament. Training for rugby sevens starts right from scratch, so even those who haven’t played before are welcome, and of course have the opportunity to play competitively for Welbeck.
