The UCAS Application System
The following information will let you understand the University and College Admissions Service (UCAS) procedure.
1. May/June L6- Students will be issued with an updated version of the acceptable degrees for Welbexians at University.
2. June L6- All of the DTUS Universities attend an open day at Welbeck College (DSFC). These will be Southampton, Birmingham, Aston (Birmingham), Newcastle, Loughborough, and Northumbria (Newcastle). Each of these Universities will have a special DTUS unit to support Welbeck students in their time there (Newcastle and Northumbria have a combined unit). Students are also allowed to apply to either Oxford or Cambridge but will have to arrange their own visits. During this visit students will be able to talk to the academic staff about the courses on offer.
3. September U6- Students have time with their tutor to produce their personal statement, and apply for a maximum of five courses. Deadline for applicants is late September.
4. October-February U6- The College will arrange visits to the DTUS Universities so that students can be interviewed and get a “feel” for the establishment.
5. March U6- Students will inform the Academic Vice Principal about which course is their first choice and which is their insurance offer. For MOD students these must both be Defence Technological Undergraduate Scheme (DTUS) approved courses except in special circumstances, i.e. medical issues. WPS students can apply freely to any university and course that they wish to follow. (Please note that UCAS does not allow the insurance offer to be higher than the first choice offer.)
6. March U6- The College, in consultation with the MOD, will ensure that the range of courses and Universities is acceptable. The students will then be informed that they should let UCAS know their options.
7. June U6- Post Welbeck board will sit to discuss any major problems, and then confirm University choice.
8. August U6- Results will be issued and the Universities will let Welbeck know their decisions. If students have achieved their first choice course they must follow that course. If they are rejected by the first choice but accepted by the reserve then they must accept the insurance offer. If they are rejected by both then they should contact the Academic Vice-Principal who will negotiate clearing at the DTUS Universities. If no course is available then decisions will need to be made about the future course of action.
