Christmas Concert (December 2009)
The Music Department at Welbeck has grown each year. This year, on 15th December 2009, was a chance to display this unsung musical talent to the rest of the College. The concert was opened with student run band, the Breaknecks, who won the House Music Competition just a week before.
Every musical group then had a chance to perform after a term of short practice sessions somehow made possible in the busy Welbeck week. The Wind band and Choir filled the programme with popular Christmas themes with the Jazz band entertaining the audience with favourites from Glenn Miller and the hip jazz era. This year we had the addition of a Brass quartet and String group, both of which managed to pull it out the bag after only half a term of practice
Special mentions must go to soloists Lauren Bowman for ‘Chanson de Matin’ on the flute, and Declan Ashworth. A humble techie, Declan surprised us all with his brave ‘Hey Jude’, supported by the Jazz band. The evening finished with Geldof’s ‘Feed the World’, during which every performer was sprayed with snow, much to our amusement.
The evening ran very smoothly this year and well punctuated the end of term and the start of Christmas. The bar has certainly been set high for the summer concert in June.
