Examination Board: EDEXCEL (Website) Why study Government and Politics?Government and Politics is the most popular Arts subject at Welbeck with a content specifically centred on the future careers of most of the students here. The new specification has a focus on the UK and our role in the world and in global politics. Elements include foreign policy commitments and membership of international peacekeeping organisations. Students will develop a crucial understanding of world affairs and an understanding of the power struggle between the states of the world. At AS the emphasis is on UK domestic politics with a consideration of how democracy operates in the UK through a study of the political parties, pressure groups and electoral processes. This is further developed through a consideration of our constitution, judicial process and the processes of our parliamentary system. At A2 the emphasis is on consideration of Structures of Global Politics including the balance of power between states based on military and economic strength. Study of major international organisations including the United Nations, NATO and G8 and their role in conflict resolution. Global political issues including Conflict, War, Terrorism and Poverty are considered with contemporary examples such as the War on Terror, the Middle East, Sudan, Chechnya etc.

Departmental Staff
Mr I C Davidson (BA Hons History and Politics-PGCE) has experience of teaching A level History and A level Government and Politics in a number of schools before arrival at Welbeck. At Welbeck he continued to teach A level History and was able to raise the profile of Government and Politics to the extent that it is now his sole teaching commitment and the department has had to employ an additional member of staff to cope with becoming the largest Arts subject. He was promoted to the Head of The Arts Faculty in 2005 and has been an examiner with Edexcel for our Government and Politics specification over a number of years. In 2011 he became the Principal examiner for Edexcel A2 Route D Global Politics. He has responsibility for the Welbeck Model United Nations team which takes Politics students to compete against other schools and colleges from around the world at Kingswood School in Bath each year.
Mr CM Carmichael (Bed (Hons) Education and History, MSc Educational Leadership) graduated from Exeter University in 1994 completing a year’s teaching in London. He joined H.M. Royal Marines Commandos serving in N. Ireland, Brunei, Norway, Zimbabwe, USA and Canada before returning to teaching in 2001. Two years of teaching History and Government and Politics in London was followed by a three year appointment in Dubai again teaching History and Government and Politics. In 2006 he returned to the UK to take up the post of Deputy Housemaster (Trenchard House) and Government and Politics teacher at Welbeck-DSFC. This was followed by the appointment to Housemaster of Trenchard House in September 2007 whilst remaining a teacher of Government and Politics.
