Beaumanor Orienteering Event (January 2012)
On Sunday 29th December 2012, a group of 19 students and Flt Lt Askew forfeited their Sunday lie-in to assist and partake in an orienteering competition staged at Beaumanor Hall and on Welbeck grounds. The event was organised by Leicestershire Orienteering Club, who had previously set up a course for the college at Beacon Hill a few months previously.
The event, co-ordinated on the College side by Flt Lt Askew with the help of students Samuel Giles and Joel Elliott, comprised of an option of 9 routes, each of varying difficulty. The event attracted Orienteer’s from across the Midlands and some from even further afield, ranging in age from 8 to 80, as well as groups of novices who fancied enjoying a Sunday out.
Marshals from Welbeck helped set up and run the start point for the event – which involved the use of electronic 'dibber boxes' for recording runners routes and times. Participants commented on the professionalism and friendly nature of the marshals, who would frequently engage in conversation with experienced competitors and guide ‘newbie’s’ to the sport with cheerfulness and patience. Elizabeth Tansley helped successfully manage the start for the orienteering event, whilst I also ran back and forth fetching maps for courses that had run out due to the unexpected number of competitors.
Nine students from Welbeck entered the event albeit most with very little experience but plenty of enthusiasm – whilst professional orienteer Sam Giles took the event in his stride, competing to retain his national ranking. Overall, Welbeck fitness prevailed in the competition, with it being fair to say that college students dominated the 'Short Green' course – Luke Williams coming 1st with Sam Woodward in a very close 2nd, followed by Matthew Crolla, Robert Gaskins-Rogers and Alex Cummings finishing 4th, 6th and 10th respectively. As the only member of his local orienteering club (SARUM) Sam Giles completed the 'Blue' course, with a well earned 1st.
Neeli Katti summed up the day: 'It was a little hectic, but it was fun meeting the families having a go, in addition to the competitors who were amazingly enthusiastic on a freezing Sunday morning.'
Welbeck DSFC would like to thank Leicestershire Orienteering Club for the competition, and looks forward to further events in the near future.
